Rionegro & Llanogrande - the airport side of the mountains
East of the tunnel, the valley opens into finca country: Llanogrande's country clubs and Sunday brunch loop, Rionegro's colonial center where Colombia signed its 1863 constitution, and cool highland air twenty minutes from the runway.
This is where you stay if you love green over concrete, or the night before an early flight. We cover it with fixed-price airport pickups (15–25 minutes door to door), a driver by the hour for the Oriente towns, and Guatapé at half the distance it is from Medellín.
What to see and do
Parque de Rionegro & Casa de la Convención
A working colonial plaza with the cathedral where the 1863 constitution was signed next door. Real town life, almost no tourists.
Llanogrande loop
The Sunday ritual of eastern Antioquia: cafés, garden restaurants and horses along the vía Llanogrande. Brunch is the sport here.
El Retiro
A woodworking pueblo twenty minutes away that quietly became one of the best eating towns in Antioquia. Go for lunch, stay for the plaza.
Parque Comfama Tutucán
A replica antioqueño village turned family park: the easy plan when travelling with kids.
Guatapé & El Peñol
From this side of the mountains the famous rock is an hour away, not two. The day trip that justifies the whole stay.
Where to eat
Out here, eating is the plan: garden restaurants and finca kitchens strung along the Llanogrande loop and into El Retiro.
Where to start:
El Rancherito (Llanogrande)
The great típica institution of the Oriente: bandejas, sancocho and weekend crowds that arrive by the busload, for decades.
Il Forno (vía Llanogrande)
The family classic of the loop since the nineties: pizzas and pastas with the lawn, the view and the kids running free.
The cafés of the loop
Pick any busy garden café on a Sunday morning and you're doing Llanogrande correctly. Follow the parked cars.
How far is everything
Door-to-door estimates in normal traffic. Every row ends the same way: to move between neighborhoods, the comfortable option is a driver who waits for you.
He drives you, waits while you do your thing, and brings you back.
Book a driver by the hourSafety & booking FAQ
How long is the transfer from JMC to Rionegro or Llanogrande?
15–25 minutes door to door at a fixed closed price, no meter, no surprises. Give us the finca or vereda reference when you book; our drivers know the area.
Is it worth staying here the night before an early flight?
It's the smart move: you sleep in the highlands and reach check-in in twenty minutes instead of crossing the valley at dawn. Book the pickup at least a day ahead - bookings need at least 24 hours' notice.
Is Guatapé really closer from this side?
Yes - about 1h–1h15 from Rionegro and Llanogrande against roughly 2h from Medellín. Same fixed tour price per vehicle, more time on the water and the rock.
Does the by-the-hour service work out here?
Yes, with one honest note: the Oriente is outside Medellín's metro area, so the hourly and full-day services carry the standard +15% out-of-town surcharge - tick 'destination outside the metro area' when you book and the price you see already includes it.
